Titel 2 Dystopian Fiction (EKSAMEN)

Over the last couple of years there has been an enormous interest in works of fiction that take place in worlds that we would call dystopian. In this course we discuss the definition and characteristics of dystopias and focus on the literary genre of dystopian fiction. Focus has been on analyzing and placing these texts within the genre of dystopian fiction according to certain characteristics (see handout). We have also discussed reasons for the popularity of this genre in recent years.

Titel 4 Shakespeare's Macbeth (EKSAMEN)

This course has introduced the class to the Elizabethan theatre and Shakespeare's time and writing style. The class has read selected scenes of the tragedy Macbeth, and we have talked about the nature of tragedy and the tragic hero Macbeth and his development. We have also worked with the role that Lady Macbeth plays in the tragedy and with the relationship between these two central characters. To round off
the course, we have watched an episode of the American television series House of Cards to discuss the relevance of Shakespeare and Macbeth today.

NB. Shakespeare is the exception to the rule. Unread parts of the play may be used for the oral exam!

Titel 5 The British Empire: Language and Power (EKSAMEN)

At its peak, the British Empire was the largest formal empire that the world had ever known, occupying about a quarter of Earth's total land area. In this course we have read texts from the viewpoint of the colonizers (the British) and analyzed how they have traditionally represented the colonized with the purpose of seeing how they justifed colonial rule through language.

The theoretical framework is provided by Edward Said's Orientalism, and the students have also been introduced to postcolonial criticism and theory as a specific way of reading texts.

This is the second of two courses about the British Empire, and in this course we change the perspective and read texts produced by writers from colonized or once-colonized countries. The goal is to see how these writers use literature as a means to regain a voice and challenge ideas of Western superiority.

Titel 7 Afr.-Am. Literature: The Harlem Renaissance (EXAM)

In this course we have worked with texts from the period in African-American literary history known as The Harlem Renaissance, which was a cultural, social and artistic explosion that took place in Harlem, New York, in the 1920s-1930s. What these texts have in common is that they try to describe the experience of being African-American and thus give voice to a group of people that had historically been ignored. In addition to this, the Harlem Renaissance was also about breaking away from white standards and celebrating black culture and heritage.
