The American Dream (EKSAMENSEMNE)
America is known as the land of opportunity, a place where you can go and make your dreams come true. Whether you are an Irish farmer in the 18th century trying to find a way to feed your family, or an aspiring actress in the 21st century trying to make it big, America is the place for you. As long as you have a dream, and you are willing to work hard for it, there is nothing you cannot do. This is the American Dream; one of the fundamental values of the American society and what has made America a country to voyage to, throughout history and still to this day. The American Dream is embedded in the very core of the American Constitution, in the American way of life, and in our perception of what America is. It has become the main theme and driving force of many a novel, song or film. But what is the American Dream? Where does it come from and where is it going? And does it even exist? This course sets out to try to define the American Dream, find out how others have defined, as well as discussing whether the American Dream is really just a dream that has no real place in realty. In addition to this, this course will examine the historical background for the American Dream as well as investigating how this dream is represented in texts both fictional and non-fictional, both contemporary and more modern. Finally, this course also looks at the negative sides of this ideal and asks “Are this dream and all its opportunities available for everyone?
