Victorian London/Gothic Literature (Eksamensemne)
The Victorian Age is a remarkable period in British history. It was a time of change, a time of great invention, exploration, and not to forget great literature. At this time the British Empire was at its highest, and the industrial revolution was roaring across the land, creating great fortune for some and even greater misfortune for others. During this era a sense of proper conduct, proper appearance and social decorum surfaced among the population, and the Victorian Age is known for a specific set of norms and values that contributed to the very definition of this era. This course sets out to investigate the Victorian Age from a historic point of view to find out which historical events, societal changes, norms and values characterize this epoch. The Victorian Age, however, was not just a time of great prosperity in form of wealth and territorial gains, but also in relation to literature, and during this time, we see some of the most frightening yet celebrated literature emerge, namely gothic horror literature. During this course, we will not only examine this era in relation to the societal changes, but also the literature that surfaced as a consequence of these changes. We will focus on the gothic horror literature, its genre conventions and how the Victorian era and society are presented through literature.
