Titel 1 1. Sport and Politics (FF1 med Idræt)

This course explores how sports stars increasingly choose to speak their minds about political issues - and how some sports brands, such as Nike, include political  statements/messages in their advertising.
We analyse commercials, speeches and opinion pieces - and as a 'case study', we analyse texts which present different attitudes to transgender women's participation in elite sports.
We focus on using the rhetorical pentagram for analysis.

(En del af forløbet er et tværfagligt forløb med idræt - FF1)

Titel 2 2. Media

This course explores how media influence our modern lives. We start out by watching and analysing the Black Mirror episode 'Nosedive' and continue to study how American politicians advertise their messages in presidential campaigns.
Finally we look at how media can create hypes about certain events or places, such as the fake gourmet restaurant The Shed in London. The students create their own advertisements for fake restaurants + write false reviews.
We focus on fiction analysis, particularly characterisation of characters + settings, themes and messages.
For the political campaign videos, we use the rhetorical pentagram cinematic features.

Titel 4 4. Vienna - Global English and Vienna during WW2

The course is a mini-course leading up to the study trip to Vienna.
We dive into English as a global language - and English as a lingua franca. During our stay in Vienna, we travel to Bratislava in Slovakia by train, where the students interview people in the streets about their experiences with English as a lingua franca.
The students use their interviews for an article, which they write as an interdisciplinary task in collaboration with social science (samfundsfag).
Furthermore, we watch the film 'Woman in Gold', which tells the story of the Austrian-Jewish woman Maria Altmann, who fled from Vienna to the US during World War II. As an old woman, she decides to reclaim her family's painting 'The Woman in Gold'. The famous painting was created by the Austrian painter Gustav Klimt and was taken by the Nazis during WW2. During our stay in Vienna, we visit the art museum Belvedere and see some of the famous Klimt paintings which are on display there.

Titel 8 8. Australia and its Indigenous Peoples

In this course we focus on the indigenous people of Australia - the Aboriginals - or 'First Nation People'.
We watch the video A Brief History of Australia as pre-reading and move on to watching the film Rabbit Proof Fence about three young Aboriginal girls' escape from a British mission house. They have been abducted from their families and placed in the mission school as part of a programme which is to make Australia's native people European/white. The girls are part of what the Australians call 'the stolen generations'. As part of our analysis of the film, the students research the Stolen Generations on the internet.
Furthermore we analyse the PM Anthony Albanese's speech, which he held at the launch of 'the Yes Campaign'. The campaign advocated a 'yes' in the referendum (held in 2023). The question Australians had to decide on was whether the country's indigenous people were to have a more prominent voice in Australian politics, through an advisory committee in parliament. The committee was to give counsel to the parliament on questions related to the country's indigenous people. The referendum resulted in a 'no', so the 'Voice Committee' was not established.
As part of the course, the students explore the challenges Australia's indigenous people face today, the Voice Referendum, and Kevin Rudd's Apology Speech from 2008 through group projects (see below).

In this course we explore some of the issues that are prominent in the Presidential Election 2024.  Which political topics are important to the American voters? What are some of the topics that divide the country? In the course we study how Trump and Harris communicate through campaign ads - which values do they highlight? Which voters do they speak to? Furthermore we look into the Capitol Hill Attack by watching the documentary Stopping the Steal. We analyse a number of speeches and opinion pieces and focus on non-fiction analysis - using the rhetorical pentagram and studying the rhetorical features and use of language in the texts.
