Truly sorry?
The phrase ‘I’m sorry’ is common. We use it when we excuse, admit or apologise. However, communicating an apology can be a very complex task, especially when the stakes are high because the person apologising might harm a brand or face a lawsuit. In this course, we will examine apologies made by businesspeople, celebrities and politicians. We will see examples of people who flat-out admit everything, but we will also examine apologies that are in fact denials. The course materials are comprised of theory, background articles, statements and videos.

The UK

My Dark Vanessa
The essential text in this course is Kate Elizabeth Russel’s novel My Dark Vanessa. Based on an analysis and interpretation of this novel, we will examine and discuss gender roles and identity in the USA. Some of the terms we will learn and use are legal rights, gender, representation, patriarchy, sexism and feminism, and we will collect information from the #MeToo debate in contemporary American society and a non-fiction text about trauma and recovery.

The Future Is Written
In this unit, we will examine how writers (and filmmakers) use their texts to explore – and in some cases criticise - societal trends and make predictions about the future. Most texts in this unit belong to the science fiction genre, and they deal with the role of technology in our vision of the future. Sci-fi texts encourage the readers to ask themselves questions like these: Is technology a tool of liberation or en-slavement? Will technology help save the planet, or could it escape our control by outsmarting us? Hence, they also address issues of control and power, often with the underlying motivation of changing the world to the better.

The Cultural Side of Sale
In this unit entitled ‘The Cultural Side of Sale’ we will examine the interplay of culture and sale from three different perspectives:
• Back to the roots (selling a car)
• Going abroad (selling a business idea)
• Adjusting to the future (selling a new business concept)
We will study the blend of car advertising and American culture, the differences between American and British culture and new shopping trends. The course is based on a variety of texts, such as TV commercials, a documentary, an episode of a TV series and newspaper articles. We will analyse fiction and non-fiction, and we will practice argumentative writing.

Narrating India
India is a huge country with a rich history and culture. There are many different Indias portrayed in history books, articles, novels, short stories, films, etc. And not only do they represent reality - they help shape reality and our perception of it. In this course, we will read different accounts and stories: ‘narrations’ of India. These narrations will help us understand the complexity of India. We will study the history of India as a British colony and the consequences of colonization. We will also explore Indian culture and identity, as well as Indian politics and gender issues in today’s India. We are going to apply different theories and methods of analysis to the texts we read, among other things postcolonial theory and discourse analysis.

Multicultural Britain
The British empire existed for nearly 400 years in total, and it included colonies in the Americas, Africa, Asia and Australasia. As we have seen in the examples of the USA and India, British rule often enabled the British to impose British laws, customs and culture on the colonial subjects while the British benefited economically and politically from their role as the colonial power.
By the end of World War Two, it became clear that Britain could no longer afford to maintain its empire, and at the same time independence movements in the colonies were growing. The British Empire fell apart.
The years after World War Two also marked the beginning of a new cultural development within Britain. Britain, the 'mother country', opened its door to people from former colonies, its 'children', who arrived with the hopes of a better life.
As Britain went from labour shortage to unemployment, the British became less immigration friendly. In present-day Britain, immigration remains a divisive topic. On the one hand, Britain is a multicultural country, and according to most travel guides, Indian Chicken Tikka Masala is the British national dish. On the other hand, Britain has seen a spread of anti-immigration sentiments across the country, the Brexit vote being one of the clearest signs that the Britons are turning inward.
In this course, we will study the cultural, social and political impact of immigration on Britain. We will study the development of immigration after World War Two and the debates about multiculturalism. Also, we will examine how the development and the debates are perceived by both white Britons and immigrants. Consequently, this course will also give us a new perspective on British identity.

English as a Lingua Franca - Cultural Side of Sale
English as a Lingua Franca - The Cultural Side of Sale II
Globalisation has created a need for communication across geographical and cultural borders. Frequently, English is the language chosen for this kind of communication which has a focus on function and less on form and correctness. In this course, we will study the characteristics of standard English, and we will examine how English is used as a Lingua Franca in a business context but also as a means of communication between people with different cultural backgrounds. In an earlier course, we examined the use of cultural codes in communication. In this course, we will see how communication can also be stripped of culture because language is merely a means of communication. In addition, we will discuss advantages and disadvantages of English as a mutual global language.
