Titel 1 "Of Mice and Men" and the American Dream

"Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck

Taking our starting point in the 1930s in America, which is marked by The Great Depression and The Dust Bowl we analyzed Steinbeck's classic piece. In the novel we see the flipside of the American Dream, where many Americans were forced to leave their homes to find work as migrant workers and were consequently degraded to second rate citizens. Through Crook's character we talked about what it meant to be black in the 1930s and through Curley's wife we saw what it meant to be a woman in the same period. Analytical focus points were setting, characterization, themes and symbols. We also saw the 1992 adaptation of "Of Mice and Men" which we analyzed consequently, with an introduction to The Hollywood Model.

Titel 2 Worlds of English

This subject was divided into two parts, due to the fact that the class had a "pædagogikum" candidate who wanted to teach social media. I was in charge of the worlds of English subject.

We initially talked about the British empire in its beginning, moved on to its zenith and rounded off with postcolonial criticism. During this subject we talked briefly about lingua franca.

We focused on the literary analysis primarily and worked intensively with "Rule Britannia", "The White Man's Burden" and the short story "Karma".

Titel 3 Social Media

Materiale:

Titel 6 Sex, gender and identity

During this topic we will focus on the differences between sex and gender and what gender stereotypes can mean for a person’s sense of identity. We are going to talk about gender neutral parenting as well as the importance of body language in a world where heteronormativity still is the norm, and we will talk about male and female role models in movies. Finally, we are going to talk about feminism and what it means to be a feminist today as well as why this term seems to have negative associations attached to it. Overall, the importance of words and how the words we use influence our perception of ourselves and our surrounding world has been an important element of this topic. For the class' SRO we worked with "Barbie" from 2023.

Titel 9 War in literature

Taking our starting point in Shakespeare's Henry V we have examined the ideal of the soldier through time. From the glorified battle of Agincourt to the heartbreaking realities of WW1 and the Vietnam War. We borrowed the question "How to tell a true War Story" from Tim O'Brien and that became our focus point throughout. Is it ever possible to tell something true about the experience of war?

Analytical terms focus on the analysis of especially poetry, but also film and short story.
Relevant terms:
Alliteration, allusion, metaphor, onomatopoeia, anaphora, personification etc.

We have read:

William Shakespeare: From "Henry V" 1599 (Act 4, scene 3)
Alfred Tennyson "The Charge of the Light Brigade" 1854
Rupert Brooke "The Soldier" 1914
Wilfred Owen "Dulce et Decorum Est" 1917/18
