Titel 5 Authoritarian states 20th Century

Focus: Topic 10 for Paper 2: Authoritarian States (20th Century).

This topic focuses on the factors that led to the emergence of authoritarian states in the 20th Century, the methods they used to consolidate and maintain power, and the impact of their policies. We will cover three Authoritarian States from different regions: Castro's Cuba, Hitler's Germany, and Mao's China.

The three themes for this topic are:

1. How the state emerged and how power was established - economic, social and political factors; use of propaganda, force,

2. How power was consolidated and maintained; legal methods versus use of force, treatment of opposition, impact of foreign policy

3. Aims and results of policies: social, economic, political, and cultural. The extent of authoritarian control.

Titel 6 The Cold War: Superpower tensions and rivals

Topic 12: The Cold War: Superpower tensions and rivalries

Paper 2

This topic is divided into three themes:

Theme 3: Rivalry, mistrust and accord
This takes a chronological approach to the events of the Cold War from the breakdown of the Grand Alliance, the shift of the Cold War to Asia, peaceful co-existence and detente through to the collapse of the Cold War.

Theme 2: Leaders and nations
This theme asks students to look at the impact of two leaders from different regions on the course and development of the Cold War and how two countries from different regions were affected.
- We have, among others, looked at the impact of the following leaders:
* USA: Harry S. Truman (USA), Dwight D. Eisenhower (USA), J.F. Kennedy (USA), and Richard M. Nixon (USA).
* USSR: Josef Stalin (USSR), Nikita Khruschev (USSR), Leonid Bresjnev (USSR), and Mikhail Gorbatjov (USSR)
* China: Mao Zedong (People's Republic of China)
* Cuba: Fidel Castro (Cuba).
- We have looked at how two countries from different regions were affected by the Cold War (not the USA or USSR). We have worked with:
* Guatemala during the Cold War.
* Vietnam and the Cold War.

Theme 3: Cold War crises
IB History Students studying this topic must study at least two Cold War crises from different regions, examining their causes, impacts, and significance. IB History specifies the four regions of the world as:
* Europe and the Middle East
* Asia and Oceania
* the Americas
* Africa
Where relevant, you must be able to identify these regions. Looking at Cold War crisis, we
have examined:
* Europe and the Middle East: the Berlin Blockade (1948), the Suez Crisis (1956), the Hungarian Revolution (1956), the Berlin Crisis (1958-1961), and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan (1979-1989).
* Asia and Oceania: the North Korean invasion of South Korea (1950-1953), the First and Second Taiwan Straits Crisis (1954–55 and 1958).
* the Americas: the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962).
* Africa: - (none)
