Evil (EXAM TOPIC)
"Evil" is a unit that discusses and looks at stories that revolve around profoundly immoral and wicked acts. At the same time, each story is viewed through the lens of the unit's introductory text, "Bad or Mad," which forces us to reexamine how we define "evil." What is moral evil? What is natural evil? What can science add to this discussion?

"Perspectives on Colonization and Imperialism" is a unit that seeks to see, understand, and challenge the "white savior" perspective of colonization and imperialism around the early 20th century. Perhaps science fiction has already shaped the world in ways that we're unaware of. Looking forward, what kind of questions does science fiction pose about our future here on Earth and beyond?
"Science Fiction" begins with a TED-Talk on the subject from which we base many of our discussions. Also, from the lecture, we are introduced to a fundamental two-word question regarding the world created by science fiction storytellers - "what if?"

"Mental Health and Self-Discovery" takes it starting point in the modern classic, "The Perks of Being a Wallflower", by Stephen Chbosky (1999). Charlie, the story's first-person narrator, is a first-year high school student who gets off to a bit of rough start. However, in no time, he gets friends and slowly begins his journey on a road to self-discovery and personal growth.
Following our work with the novel, our next and final text is a poem that revolves around the theme of bullying. The two texts allow us to compare storytelling techniques, characters, themes, and the topic of "mental health and self-discover" as a whole.
