Titel A Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four EKSAMEN

This course provides an in depth study of George Orwell's novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949) with a focus on the genre, analysis of narration, setting, characters, composition, language and style, and interpretations of the themes and message. We will be touching upon the dystopic genre, surveillance, and totalitarianism, and we will draw perspectives to facial recognition technologies today and various historical examples of totalitarian regimes.

Titel C Shakespeare's Macbeth EKSAMEN

The course aims at giving an insight into some of Shakespeare's many layers of writing for the stage by studying his play, Macbeth. It commences with a brief introduction to Shakespeare's language. During the course we will also become familiar with literary terms such as iambic pentameter, blank verse, run-on lines, metaphor, simile, aside, soliloquy etc. We will be studying aspects of the play such as The Great Chain of Being, witchcraft, destiny vs. free will, and tragic flaw. We will compare the texts with various film clips of the play.  

The course has been taught partly online due to Corona-virus lock-down.

The aim of this course is to focus on the British Empire and postcolonial perspectives on the past and the present. We will study a selection of texts from the perspectives of postcolonial criticism, with a focus on themes and assumptions like cultural relativity, colonial discourse and power, ambivalence, identity, the role of the writer, etc.

Prompted by the heavy toll on African Americans by Covid-19, this course provides an overview of some of the aspects of the black American experience. What has it meant to grow up and live in America as a black person? How has this experience been manifested in articles, pictures, poetry, speeches, lyrics, and film?
