Titel 2 #3: Cultural Awareness

Focus on:
This course focuses on applying theories on culture to fictional and non-fictional texts from around the world. Students explore the concepts of identity, stereotypes, and prejudices while developing intercultural competence through the study of value dimensions. The course also introduces argumentation analysis for non-fiction and uses new criticism as a method to analyze fictional texts.

Focus on:
This course explores the cultural, historical, and social complexities of India, focusing on its transition from British colonial rule to its current status as a global power. Through a diverse selection of fictional and non-fictional texts, students investigate themes such as identity, the caste system, and the tension between traditional values and modernity. A key focus is the re-interpretation of universal themes by comparing Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet with the Bollywood adaptation Dhadak, examining how Indian social hierarchies like caste transform the traditional family feud.

This course also focuses on English as a global lingua franca through the study of the Hindi/English Bollywood movie Dhadak.

Focus on:
This course explores the characteristics of Postmodernism in Anglophone literature and culture, with a specific focus on American Minimalism and "Dirty Realism" through the works of Raymond Carver. Students investigate themes such as fragmented identity, the collapse of grand narratives, and the relative nature of truth. A key methodological focus besides New criticism is Reader-Response Criticism, where students examine how meaning is constructed in the encounter between the text and the individual reader's background and expectations.
