This topic deals with the positive and negative aspects of The American Dream. The Declaration of Independence will be the starting point from which concepts, symbols and terms such as The American Flag, Uncle Sam, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, the social class ladder, immigration and ethnicity, the melting pot/the salad bowl will be explored.

Titel 2 (Exam) Topic 2: A brief guide to Britain

This topic is an introduction to Britain Today through different text types that help explain contemporary British life and culture. The topic focuses on contemporary British society and explores British culture through the class system, pros and cons about immigration, the North vs. the South, Brexit.

Key concepts that the students are expected to know about:
- The traditional class system and the newly defined 7 social classes.
- Basic knowledge about Brexit and its consequences.
- The main differences between the culture in North and South England.

Literary focus: Close analysis of speeches, poems and films.
5-minute oral presentations on Britain/The US are held by all students during the spring semester.

Titel 3 (Exam) Topic 3: A Craving for Crime

This topic deals with our fascination with crime stories and true crime. Theory is introduced that explains the reader reception and our fascination with crime. Classic writers as well as new podcasts are introduced and the following terms are expected to be known: Realism, locked room mysteries, idyllic, urban and symbolic landscapes, the protagonist as the (hardboiled) loner, the traditional three stage plot, the push effect, pull effect and reveal.
Literary analysis devices introduced: Suspense, In medias res beginning, surprise ending, point of no return and climax, foreshadowing.
As a part of this topic, the students are doing a podcast on a crime topic of their own choice.

Titel 4 Topic 4: Gangsta Rap

This topic deals with gangsta rap. First, gangta rap is defined and a timeline of gangsta rap is given. Then the students learn about the lyrical elements and themes of gangsta rap, from the very traditional rap to the most recent rap where women take over the gangsta rap elements and own the genre, too.
Lyrical devices are thoroughly introduced during this topic.

This topic focuses on Britain as a colonial empire and the historical consequences interpreted in literature. Lines are drawn to especially India and East Africa and the colonization and postcolonial literature of these areas, especially Jomo Kenyatta's story The Gentlemen of the Jungle and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's talk on The single stories are refered to as a backdrop for post-colonial readings of texts.

A topic on allegories and how they reflect interesting societal topics in the English-speaking world, such as tyranny, religion, social structures etc. We use allegorical definitions to termine the kind of allegory and analyse in depth. The actantial model is used as an effective way of determining the protagonist's goal in each allegory.

Titel 8 (Exam) Topic 8: Mexico and the US

This topic is part of an exchange trip to Tec de Monterrey, one of Mexico's finest universities. The students are doing an exchange with Mexican pre-university students in order to learn about Mexican culture and its relation to American culture. The university is inspired a lot by US colleges and English is spoken by all students and teachers. At Tec de Monterrey you see a blend of Mexican and American culture, and the students get to learn how the two cultures borrow from each other but also how the US culture is the dominant one. They see that in several of the texts where Mexicans try to achieve The American dream while not being able to climb the social ladder. In Queretaro, where the students live, the dream is different and many of the families do not think much about the US in their daily lives although they are affected by US politics in several ways. This is why we have also studied Trump with "Today's Trump" in most lessons and have read his Inauguration speech. We have applied some of the postcolonial terms from "The British Empire and after" on some of the texts about being a Mexican in the US or living in the borderlands.
