(Exam) Topic 3: A Craving for Crime
This topic deals with our fascination with crime stories and true crime. Theory is introduced that explains the reader reception and our fascination with crime. Classic writers as well as new podcasts are introduced and the following terms are expected to be known: Realism, locked room mysteries, idyllic, urban and symbolic landscapes, the protagonist as the (hardboiled) loner, the traditional three stage plot, the push effect, pull effect and reveal.
Literary analysis devices introduced: Suspense, In medias res beginning, surprise ending, point of no return and climax, foreshadowing.
As a part of this topic, the students are doing a podcast on a crime topic of their own choice.

(Exam) Topic 8: Mexico and the US
This topic is part of an exchange trip to Tec de Monterrey, one of Mexico's finest universities. The students are doing an exchange with Mexican pre-university students in order to learn about Mexican culture and its relation to American culture. The university is inspired a lot by US colleges and English is spoken by all students and teachers. At Tec de Monterrey you see a blend of Mexican and American culture, and the students get to learn how the two cultures borrow from each other but also how the US culture is the dominant one. They see that in several of the texts where Mexicans try to achieve The American dream while not being able to climb the social ladder. In Queretaro, where the students live, the dream is different and many of the families do not think much about the US in their daily lives although they are affected by US politics in several ways. This is why we have also studied Trump with "Today's Trump" in most lessons and have read his Inauguration speech. We have applied some of the postcolonial terms from "The British Empire and after" on some of the texts about being a Mexican in the US or living in the borderlands.
