A brief introduction to the two political parties in the US - Republicans and Democrats - and their candidates. We will also describe and analyze some satirical drawings commenting on stages in the election campaign.

Titel 2 Crime and punishment

This topic will focus on crime and punishment - with a special focus on the death penalty. The course will include an introduction to rhetoric in English and film analysis. The written work is an individual speech for or against death penalty. Students are asked to consider modes of appeal and oral performance (non-verbal communication). The speeches will be performed in groups in competition with other speeches until 3 will be performed in class.

Titel 3 Dead Poets Society - film and poetry

This theme will focus on the film "Dead Poets Society". Groups will be working with film analysis of different scenes from the film and presenting them in class. We will also take a closer look at some of the poetry quoted in the film. A coming-of-age topic, which also includes Freud's model of the mind.

Titel 5 Digital Dilemmas

A topic focusing on our digital society and the dilemmas it creates.
The topic will deal with digital dilemmas in humanitarian crises and in our everyday use of social media. The problem about fake news and digital surveillance will also be dealt with.
How do the social media affect us, our behaviour and our knowledge of the world? We will deal with how we are influenced as individuals and discuss whether our democracies are at danger due to the spreading of fake news. Goffman’s theory of front stage and back stage behaviour - and how it can be related to social media - will be included.

Titel 6 The American Dream - or Nightmare?

This theme revolves around the core values that characterize American identity and society and how these are linked to the history of the country. Positive and possibly negative aspects of the American Dream are dealt with - in a historic as well as a contemporary context.
Key concepts: the frontier heritage, equality of opportunity, self-reliance, individual freedom, American Dream, melting pot/salad bowl, material wealth, hard work, Civil Rights Movement, Black Lives Matter.

Titel 7 Aspects of Love

The novel "Normal People" by Sally Rooney will constitute the main part of this course. Focus on analysis and interpretation using different ways of working with the text. And two episodes of the BBC TV series will be screened as part of the course. The novel will be contextualized by comparing it to texts and film dealing with other aspects of love.

Titel 8 Bad or Mad? Going Mental

This course revolves around texts with characters whose behaviour in one way or the other deviates from the norm. Either because the characters have been diagnosed with a mental illness, or because their behaviour violates all socially acceptable norms. What can explain those kinds of behaviour? Genes or elements in the surroundings? In other words, is it due to nature or nurture? We will also include Svendsen's four kinds of evil in an attempt to classify the characters presented in the texts.

Titel 9 From the British Empire to Multicultural Britain

This course deals with British imperialism and its impact on modern British identity. We will deal with the history of the British Empire as seen through the eyes of British texts/films. The post-colonial perspective will also be represented. The course ends in today's multicultural Britain.
