Titel 1 Growing up

I forlængelse af dette indrog vi Emma Watsons UN tale “Gender equality is your issue too”. Eleverne arbejdede her med den retoriske analyse.

Afslutningsvist læste eleverne teksterne "PM's Wife crusades against bullies" og "Together, we can beat bullies” for at kunne arbejde videre med de retoriske virkemidler, der bliver anvendt til at analysere non-fiction. Eleverne så efterfølgende kortfilmen ”One Small Step” for at afslutte forløbet ”growing up”. Her blev de introduceret til Cinematic techniques.

Titel 2 The American Dream + værklæsning (EKSAMENSEMNE)

The American Dream

Gennem arbejdet med "The Declaration of Independence" har eleverne udforsket USA’s kerneværdier: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

I forbindelse med The Civil Rights Movement og Black Lives Matter har eleverne analyseret teksterne "Let America Be America Again", "The Help" og "The Hate U Give".

Titel 5 Humour (EKSAMENSEMNE)

In this topic, we focused on the use of humour in texts and which humour theories and devices are used to achieve certain effects.
The three humour theories are .
- Incongruity theory (= uoverensstemmelsesteorien)
- Relief theory (= forløsningsteorien)
- Superiority theory (= overlegenhedsteorien)

Methods of analysis:
We have worked with fiction AND non-fiction texts, so we have practised using analytical models for both genres.
- Fiction: Setting, characterisation, narrative point of view, symbolism, theme and message.
- Non-fiction: Rhetorical pentagram: Sender, topic, receiver, language, circumstances, intention. Specifically for LANGUAGE: the three forms of appeal and how they connect with humor theories and humor devices, such as irony, sarcasm, exaggeration (hyperbole), satire.

Texts:
from Serious Business:
“Toolbox for analysing humourous texts” (pp. 8-9)
“The Philosophy of humour” (pp. 10-13)
“Humour devices” (pp. 14-25)

Titel 6 Australia - man and nature (EKSAMENSEMNE)

This topic focuses on Australia, more specifically on aspects of Australian nature and how human beings interact with nature. We have read texts that focus on climate and the issues involved with climate change. For example, when tourists treat nature badly and it leads to unsustainable tourism (the short story "The Larder"). We have also read an article that criticises the Australian government for not taking the climate crisis seriously and not acknowledging that there is a connection between climate change and extreme weather events ("Australia, your country is burning").  We have looked into the topic of the so-called "Stolen Generations" and how Aborigines have a connection with nature which is sacred and harmonious. Here we watched the movie "Rabbit-Proof Fence" where we see the harshness of Australian nature and how, although it can pose as an obstacle for the girls in returning home, Molly's survival skills bring them home, as as she's used to this sort of environment. The eagle (the spirit bird) becomes a guide for Molly in becoming reunited with her home.
In Ian Mudie's poem, "This Land", Australian nature is depicted with contrasts (as harsh AND beautiful at the same time) through the use of imagery such as personification, metaphors and similes.

Texts:

"Australia, your country is burning" (2020), an article by Michael Mann (pp. xx in "Worlds of English", 2nd edition)
"The Larder" (1984), a short story by Morris Lurie (pp. xx in Footprints, ed. by xx)
"This Land" (1935), a poem by Ian Mudie (pp. xx in "Worlds of English", 2nd edition)
"Rabbit-Proof Fence" (2002), a film by Phillip Noyce (findes på cfu)
"The Stolen Generation" (2000), an article by Terry McCarthy (in TIME Magazine)
"Lars Jensen: Australian land as protagonist", a video on the "Worlds of English" e-book website.

Arbejdsområder:
- træning af non-fiction essay (=> terminsprøven)

Titel 7 Language and diversity in the UK (EKSAMENSEMNE)

This topic focuses on variations of English in the UK/Britain and how language is closely linked to one's identity. We will also look into how English became a Global Language.
We have mostly read poems,  and have discussed what to focus on at the oral exam.

Texts:
- “How English took over the World”, YT video
- Introduction to chapter 2 "Language and Diversity" in the book "Everyone Is Here: New Shapes of Diversity and Belonging in Britain, Systime 2021 pp. 24-31) edited by Sten Pultz Moslund.
- “Listen Mr Oxford Don” (1985), a poem by John Agard
- "Reporting from the Frontline of the Great Dictionary Disaster" (2006), a poem by John Agard.

”Language and Diversity” text – students’ notes from the blackboard:
- How Ngugi wa Thiong’o was forced to speak English, rather than Kikuyu, his native (Kenyan) language, during colonization of Kenya by the English.
- John Agard’s experience with 'criminalization' in his poem “Listen Mr. Oxford Don” because his use of (Carribbean) English is different from Standard English and he wants it to be acknowledged on equal terms with "the Queen's English". => he wants immigrants to be included.
- Reshaping of English by immigrants to express their cultural background
- How colonized people created ethnolects as a form of expression and culture.
- Ethnolects are seen as “Bad English” from a racist perspective, and may therefore be looked down upon.

In "Reporting from the Frontline of the Great Dictionary Disaster", John Agard wants to draw attention to the fact that if loan words/foreign words 'left' the English language and 'returned' to their native origin, English would grow thin. In other words, English has relied on other languages historically AND the UK is a multicultural nation. (the words leaving could be an analogy for immigrants leaving).
