Titel 2 Fairy Tales and Fantasy

Fairy Tales: Students will analyze fairy tales. Students will learn to define the genre of “fairy tale” and identify the typical elements/structure of a fairy tale.

Fantasy: We will read excerpts from various types of fantasy texts. Some texts will be supplanted by the film version of the novel. Students will learn genre related vocabulary and be able to describe what characterizes a fantasy text as well as what distinguishes different types of fantasy.

Forløbet har haft fokus på genren science fiction. Her især ældre tekster af Ray Bradbury, hvor fokusset har været hvordan forholdet mellem karakterne og/eller konflikten behandles i genren.

Titel 4 Black American Voices (EXAM TOPIC)

In this topic, we have focused on the history of Black Americans, from the time of slavery.
Keywords are slavery, systemic racism, the thirteenth and fourteenth amendment to the constitution, Jim Crow laws, segregation.
We have worked with a variety of genres: Non-fiction texts, a song, a movie, a documentary, a TED-talk.

"Amend: The Fight for America", Episode 1 (2021) (a Netflix series, but we watched it on YouTube).

Titel 5 Australia: Man and Nature (EXAM TOPIC)

This topic focuses on Australia, more specifically on aspects of Australian nature and how human beings interact with nature. We have read texts that focus on climate and the issues involved with climate change (The Great Barrier Reef article by Jodie Rummer). For example, when tourists treat nature badly and it leads to unsustainable tourism (the short story "The Larder"). We have also read an article that criticises the Australian government for not taking the climate crisis seriously and not acknowledging that there is a connection between climate change and extreme weather events ("Australia, your country is burning").  We have looked into the topic of the so-called "Stolen Generations" and how Aborigines have a connection with nature which is sacred and harmonious. Here we watched the movie "Rabbit-Proof Fence" where we see the harshness of Australian nature and how, although it can pose as an obstacle for the girls in returning home, Molly's survival skills bring them home, as as she's used to this sort of environment. The eagle (the spirit bird) becomes a guide for Molly in becoming reunited with her home.
We also discussed the removal of half-caste children from their families ("Stolen Generations"), based on the government's idea of "breeding out" the aboriginal in them, and what it did to their identity to be forced to grow up in a white setting, far away from home, most likely never seeing their families again.

Titel 6 Being Different - Værklæsning (EXAM TOPIC)

Fokus for forløbet er at læse romanen "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time" af Mark Haddon, om Christopher som har Aspergers Syndrom. Vi har arbejdet med tekstanalytiske begreber og grundlæggende metoder til analyse af fiktionstekster, herunder theme and message, narrative technique/structure, point of view, osv. Vi har desuden berørt bogens forskellige genretræk, inkl. detective fiction, coming-of-age novel, YA fiction.

A short summary of the novel:
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time follows the story of Christopher Boone, a 15 year old, who is exceptional at Maths but finds people confusing. Christopher has a form of autism. The book opens with Christopher discovering a dead dog in his neighbour, Mrs Shears', garden. Despite his father, Ed, warning Christopher not to get involved, Christopher decides to investigate the death of the dog. In doing so he discovers that his mother is not dead as his father had told him, but alive and well, living in London. He also discovers that it was his father who killed the dog.

Christopher feels that his father is a murderer, who he cannot trust. He can no longer live with him and so he bravely travels to London to find his mother. Christopher has difficulty settling into his new life in London and returns to Swindon to take his A-level Maths exam. The book ends with him passing the exam and the realisation that he can do anything he puts his mind to.

Titel 7 Language and Identity in the UK (EXAM TOPIC)

This topic focuses on variations of English in the UK/Britain and how language is closely linked to one's identity. We will also look into how English became a Global Language.
We have mostly read poems,  and have discussed what to focus on at the oral exam.

- "Reporting from the Frontline of the Great Dictionary Disaster" (2006), a poem by John Agard.


”Language and Diversity” text – notes for the text:
- How Ngugi wa Thiong’o was forced to speak English, rather than Kikuyu, his native (Kenyan) language, during colonization of Kenya by the English.
- John Agard’s experience with 'criminalization' in his poem “Listen Mr. Oxford Don” because his use of (Carribbean) English is different from Standard English and he wants it to be acknowledged on equal terms with "the Queen's English". => he wants immigrants to be included.
- Reshaping of English by immigrants to express their cultural background
- How colonized people created ethnolects as a form of expression and culture.
- Ethnolects are seen as “Bad English” from a racist perspective, and may therefore be looked down upon.

In "Reporting from the Frontline of the Great Dictionary Disaster", John Agard wants to draw attention to the fact that if loan words/foreign words 'left' the English language and 'returned' to their native origin, English would grow thin. In other words, English has relied on other languages historically AND the UK is a multicultural nation. (the words leaving could be an analogy for immigrants leaving).
