EKS: Shakespeare
This topic focuses on the relevance of Shakespeare today, and how his sonnets and plays introduce universal themes and imagery that still play a significant role in the modern world.
In terms of themes, we have discussed different aspects and stages of love, jealousy, morality, ambition, temptation, power, madness, and gender roles.
When reading the sonnets, the structure and poetic style have been obvious points of discussion, but we have also concluded that their tone, language, and attitudes to life resemble a modern way of talking about and dealing with trouble.
We have worked with the following texts:
"Romeo and Juliet": Act 1, Scene 5, Act 2, Scene 1, and Act 2, Scene 2 and the corresponding scenes in Baz Luhrman’s adaptation from 1996.
"Macbeth": Act 1, Scene 3 and Act 1, Scene 5.
Sonnet 18, 29, 116, and 130.
