Titel 1 The American Dream

The American Dream

What defines The American Dream? In this theme we have focused on the idea of The American Dream. How do Americans define this dream and in what ways has it changed since The Declaration of Independence in 1776? We have explored different descriptions and presentations of The American Dream in both fictional texts and non-fictional texts.

"Traditonal Values and Beliefs", (ss. 28-34) from the anthology "American Ways", written by Dantesman, Crandall and Kearny, Longman 2005.

"I Can", rap song by NAS, released in 2003. We used a model for poetry analysis to analyse the lyrics of this song.

English as a Global Language and English as a lingua franca

Why do so many people speak English in their everyday lives? And what happens to the English language when it is used by so many non-native speakers for different purposes? These are some of the questions that we will be studying during this theme.

Titel 3 The Trouble with Ireland and Northern Ireland

This theme will be focusing on Northern Ireland and The Troubles.The Troubles were a thirty-year conflict (1969-1998), involving republican and loyalist paramilitaries and state forces, which claimed over 3,500 lives and injured 50,000 others. While studying this theme, we will also touch on the cultural and political ties between Britain, Ireland and Northern Ireland since these countries are still profundly affected by their shared history.

Crime in Fiction

What defines crime fiction? And why do people read crime fiction? This theme will focus on the presentation of the protagonist in different crime stories. We will be studying setting, point of view, characterisation, mood and themes in both texts and tv-series.
